A pen and ink drawing of an open wooden tool case on a workbench, lined in teal and divided into five compartments. From left to right they hold a small square sieve with three orange cubes beside it, a rubber stamp with an orange ink pad, a brass ear trumpet, an open pocket watch showing its gears, and a closed notebook with a pencil. Calipers lie on the bench in front of the case.

The Maximo REST API in Practice

The REST API is how almost everything talks to IBM Maximo Manage today: Maximo Mobile, the MAF web apps, integrations, scripts and the tools we build for customers. This series explains the API the way you use it, one task per article, with requests you can copy.

The facts come from IBM’s documentation and from our own work with the REST API in our systems and in customer projects. We run every example on our test system, on Manage in the MAS 9.2 series, and we name where a fact comes from when it matters.

How the series is built
#

  1. Reading data. Selecting records with oslc.where, choosing the attributes and related records with oslc.select, sorting and paging, counts and aggregates, saved queries, and domain values in a query.
  2. Writing data. Create, update and merge, child objects, bulk requests, attachments, and actions, workflows and scripts behind the API.
  3. What IBM’s own clients send. The requests of the Manage UI, the MAF web apps and Maximo Mobile, as you can see them in the browser and in the logs.
  4. Under the hood. The object structure path and the MBO path, API keys and tokens, the system properties that change the API, and query parameters that IBM does not document.
  5. Field notes. The error codes and what each one means, duplicate requests and retries, and one symptom with its cause per note.

Parts 1, 2 and 5 are public. Parts 3 and 4 open with a public overview, and the full depth is 🔒 members-only. New articles appear here as they are published.
